Unveiling hijabi make-up

- Syahirah.mokhtazar@nst.com.my

ILOVE it that we’re able to learn so many different make-up techniques for basically everything. Want to make your eyebrows appear thick but natural? Apply hair-like strokes to thicken the colour, and finish it off with a shaping brush.

Want to make you cheekbones stand out? Apply the right contour technique.

But it got me thinking about women who wear the tudung. What are the beauty rules for when you don the hijab?

I was recently in touch with celebrity tudung stylist Didiyana Ehsan, whose clientele r anges from A-list celebrities like Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor to VIPS and non-celebs. In case you were wondering how Neelofa slays every hijab look... well, it’s due to Didi.

Now, wearing the tudung and doing your make-up (I assume as I don’t wear the headscarf) can be a little tricky as you’ve got a couple of things to consider.

How do you coordinate the tone of your make-up with the colour of the hijab? What is too much and what is too simple?

Is it better to put make-up on before or after you wear the hijab? How do you get rid of the annoying make-up stains?

Since the hair is covered, leaving the face to become the centre of attention, it’s best to keep things simple.

the make-up.”

It’s all about balancing colour, from lip shades to the headscarf and the eye makeup.

“If you’re going for an all-black look, opt for subtle, natural make-up. But if the colour of your outfit and hijab is pastel, then you can be bold on the lips,” says Didiyana who started her styling career in 2011.

Hijab wearers often find that the foundation leaves a stain on the scarf but there are ways to prevent it.

“After I apply the foundation and makeup, and once my hair is scrunched up

nicely, I wear my innersnowcap from back to front,” she says.

This allows her to adjust the hem of the innersnowcap to sit nicely around the hairline, without touching the foundation.

But if the inner snowcap or hijab gets smeared with make-up, Didiyana cleans it with a special scarf soap from local hijab brand Ola Scarves.

Beauty influencer Hani Sidow from London shared a hack online when it comes to making her hijab stay clean whenever she needs to retouch make-up. “I place a little bit of tissue over and under my headscarf before I apply powder.”

When defining your features through contouring, it is mostly done by applying shade around the hairline, but since you’ve already got your hijab on, it’s best to just apply it around the hijab line.

To make it easy to blend the contour products when wearing the hijab, use cream-textured products instead of powdered ones.

As for your facial features, highlight those cheekbones! Apply a soft shade of blush to make cheeks appear rosy, or stroke on some highlighter for some glow.
