21 WIN BH’S EXCELLENT STUDENT AWARDS
NSTP CEO hopes awards will be a stepping stone to a bright future
TWENTY-ONE students were presented Excellent Student Awards at Anugerah Pelajar Cemerlang Berita Harian (APCBH) 2017 at the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) Balai Berita yesterday.
NSTP chief executive officer Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hamid, who presented the awards, said he hoped APCBH 2017 would be a platform for students to carve a successful future.
“It’s been 10 years since we first organised APCBH, and BH has groomed many excellent students who have made our country proud, such as Dr Nur Amalina Che Bakri who obtained 17As in 2004 and is BH’s education ambassador. Besides that, Nik Nur Madinah Nik Mohamad Kamal is one of our top recipients after getting 20As in 2008.”
Jalil said NSTP was focused on making education a priority as it was important to produce experienced and dynamic future leaders who would continue the development of the country.
“BH has developed various educational products, such as Didik, Minda and Skor. We have implemented FullAMark, which allows students to study digitally.”
Jalil said APCBH aimed to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of students and Rakan Sekolah BH, who have excelled in their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, while being active in extra-curricular activities.
Present at the ceremony were NSTP senior executive editor (convergence) Saidon Idris, BH executive editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman, Education Vertical general manager Farah Ezrin Mohd Rashidi, students, parents and teachers.
APCBH, which is divided into three categories, was introduced by BH in 2007. Seven recipients for each category are awarded RM1,000, a trophy, a certificate and other tokens of appreciation.
In conjunction with BH’s 60th anniversary, three additional categories were introduced in 2016 — Rakan Sekolah Cemerlang BH Akademik, Kokurikulum and Pendidik Kreatif.
The awards are based on academic and extra-curricular performance, in line with the Education Ministry’s vision to nurture holistic students who are able to balance academic and extra-curricular activities, such as sports and societies.
Only those who have attended Seminar Bimbingan Peperiksaan BH, subscribed to BH education pull-outs or FullAMark (NST interactive online educational portal) throughout last year, were eligible to apply.
SPM top scorer Evan Kok Yip Ming of SMJK Katolik was one of the proud recipients in the SPM category.
“My sister was my biggest motivation in applying for this award. She had previously joined and thought that it would be an excellent education platform for me. She is my role model and I would really like to push the limits to excel like her.
“I’m going to give the RM1,000 prize money to my mother because she has sacrificed a lot for me,” said the straight-A student, who is pursuing a medical degree.
Third-time winner Iman Aidi Elham Hairul Nizam from Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) has not stopped using BH education material in preparing for his examinations.
“My family has played an important role in helping me win this award. Diligently, my father would keep all the Skor pull-outs for me and I would use it for exam preparation when I get back from the hostel.”
Iman Aidi’s father, who is an engineer, said that he couldn’t be more proud of his son, who intended to be an aeronautical engineer after completing his degree in Moscow, Russia.
Coincidentally, his 21-year-old sister, Dini Elissyakira, also won all three categories throughout her schooling years.
“I encouraged my brother to join as it had opened up a lot of doors for me.
“As the eldest of four siblings, I’m happy to see my brother following in my footsteps,” said the medical student.
