UMNO and Pas leaders put on a display of unity to champion the rights of Malays and Muslims at Himpunan Kebangkitan Ummah at the Kelab Sultan Sulaiman field in Kampung Baru, yesterday.

Among the Umno leaders present were Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Federal Territories Umno chief Datuk Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii.

Pas was represented by its secretary-general, Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, information chief Nasrudin Hassan and central committee member Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz.

Some 2,000 people gathered at the event, which began about 9am.

Also present were representatives from non-governmental organisations, such as Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia and Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa.

The gathering saw a list of demands made to ensure the presevation of Malay rights, as well as people voicing their objection against those who questioned the position of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V, and rejecting the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate.

Asyraf said the rally was an expression of the concern that Malays and Muslims shared over the country’s direction.

“They arose after they witnessed their rights being toyed around with by certain quarters,” he said.

“This is a reminder to those concerned not to act according to their whims and fancies, because ultimately, the power lies in the hands of the people.”
