Society gets first female chairman

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Malaysian Red Crescent Society chairman Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim aims to recruit more youth volunteers into the society.

“The society was established seven decades ago and has 300,000 members of whom twothirds are youth. We aim to have more participation from youth,” she said after a short ceremony marking her appointment.

She said she was proud to be appointed the society’s first female chairman.

Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz, who is Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, replaces Tunku Tan Sri Shahriman Tunku Sulaiman, who had served the society for 16 years. Shahriman has been appointed the society’s adviser.

Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said the society adopted nine villages in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang to prepare them for disaster relief and recovery programmes.

She said 3,335 people had benefited from the programme.

“They were exposed to the Disaster Risk Management approach, which means that they were trained under our cleanliness and health modules, and trained on management and supply of clean water, especially during disasters.”

She said she planned to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“I look forward to schedule meetings with ministries, such as the Health, Women, Family and Community Development and Youth Ministries.”
