Umno Supreme Council renamed
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno’s highest decision-making body will now be known as the working committee council.
In announcing this change, the party’s secretary-general, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, said the previous name of Umno Supreme Council was no longer suitable as the party was now in the opposition.
“Previously, we were in the government and the word supreme was necessary as we were also a decision- and policy-making body,” he said at a press conference at the Umno headquarters here.
With this change, he said, each working committee member would be given a portfolio to look into with the assistance of a secretariat council.
Umno’s advisory council is led by party veteran Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah. Eight other councils, nine committees and 10 secretariats were also formed.
Following this change, Annuar said, there would be many transformations in the party.
“We plan to amend the party constitution with regard to our logo, slogan, membership entry age and most importantly, our struggle.”
He said amendments would include looking into how Umno’s affiliate members or those supportive of the party could join as part of a coalition.
He said the party would allow state liaison committee chairmen and division chiefs to accept new members at age 16.
“We will empower them to handle recruitment, but for emergency or appeal cases, they need to refer them to the party headquarters,” he said.
