Bowlers face prospect of returning empty-handed from Detroit

national bowlers are in danger of returning without medals from the ongoing World Youth Championsh­ips in Detroit.

They must now make an impression in the boys and girls’ team and masters events following failure to make an impression in the singles and doubles.

Brandon Ting-Shahrukh Amin Zulkifli were Malaysia’s best performers in the boys’ doubles by finishing 19th on 2,489, while Rafiq Ismail-Tun Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, who were silver medallists at the 2016 Las Vegas edition, were placed 39th on 2,365 total.

Sweden’s Robert Lindberg-Alfred Berggren won gold by overcoming Australia’s Jayden Panella-Blyane Fletcher 479-383 in the final.

In the girls’ event, Nur Syazwani SaharGilli­an Lim were placed 11th on 2,497 pinfalls, while Nur Ameerahusn­a Aznel-Nur Amirah Auni Azman came in 17th on 2,399.

Mexico’s Paola Limon-Raquel Orozco won gold with a 433-420 win over American pair Taylor Bailey-Breanna Clemmer.

“We are banking on the bowlers in the team event. Hopefully, they can pull themselves together and deliver,” said team manager Maradona Chok.

“The coaches are preparing the bowlers accordingl­y. They were frustrated when the strikes did not come and it affected them in the doubles.”

The last time Malaysia failed to win a medal at the world youth meet was in 2002 in Pattaya.
