Expedited pathway to CIMA qualification

- THE

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has signed a threeyear Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC), providing a learning pathway for TARUC students to pursue the CIMA professional qualification while pursuing their bachelor’s or master’s degrees.

The agreement will help increase the number of qualified management accountants in the nation and bring together students, academics, accounting professionals and business experts to further strengthen and promote the profession.

Through the MoU, TARUC students will have an expedited pathway to the CIMA qualification and the prestigious Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. The CGMA distinguishes more than 150,000 management accountants worldwide who have achieved the highest benchmark of quality and competence and are leading businesses to achieve sustainable success.

TARUC is the only institute in Malaysia granted the maximum number of exemptions for the qualification. The exemptions are applicable to students from the Bachelor of Accounting (Honours), Bachelor of Business Accounting and Finance (Honours) programmes, as well as postgraduate students pursuing the Master of Business Administration programme. Successful candidates will graduate with their degree and receive the CGMA designation once they have a minimum of three years’ relevant work experience.

The MoU signatories were Venkkat Ramanan, FCMA, CGMA, regional vice-president - Asia Pacific, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, on behalf of CIMA, and TARUC president Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok.

On the signing of the MoU, Ramanan said: “Initiatives like this one with TARUC are vital in preparing students with the skills and competencies employers are seeking. The dual nature of achieving a degree and pursuing the globally recognised CGMA designation not only helps students enhance their employability but also supports developing future generations of management accountants with the skills to grow businesses and contribute to the economy.”

Tan said: “Both TARUC and CIMA have shared common ground and many initiatives in enhancing professional accountancy education. We thank CIMA for having full confidence and trust in TARUC by granting maximum exemptions to the three programmes. As TARUC celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, we are honoured to receive this great endorsement of our academic achievements and quality of learning.”

CIMA will be hands-on in conducting exam technique seminars, providing technical expertise, know-how and administrative support to help TARUC students studying for the CIMA professional qualification.

The collaboration not only is an opportunity for TARUC students to be a part of an influential network of management accountants worldwide, but also for TARUC to further promote the knowledge of management accounting to students and academic staff.
