Bian’s visit puts Sg Kandis woes under the spotlight

- By Syed Umar Ariff

SHAH ALAM: Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni had a big mission yesterday — he had to present a proposal on improving public infrastructure to Works Minister Baru Bian, who was scheduled to visit Sungai Kandis yesterday.

What took place was a test for Zawawi to show his commitment to the pledges made.

Zawawi, touted as the by-election’s favourite candidate due to PKR’s incumbency in the constituency, had been championing local issues, such as poor drainage that resulted in flash floods.

Though the race seems insignificant due to its electorate’s population and results on the state administration, it is a barometer for Pakatan Harapan in looking after the welfare of stakeholders.

PKR has been defending the constituency since 2008, but problems, such as poor waste management and road condition continue to bug the locals.

It does not bode well for Selangor to have overlooked the interests of those who matter — the rakyat.

Most of Sungai Kandis folk are small business owners, teachers, farmers and government retirees.

Their demands are simple — cover potholes and upgrade the drainage system.

Social ills are a problem, so some have requested for alleys to be lit so that people can walk home safely at night. These are problems that residents have been asking the authorities to resolve.

This is the third term that they had pooled support for a PKR-led government, which is under Pakatan Harapan.

Their plight could have been resolved years ago. Selangor is not a poor state. Fulfilling promises may not be the easiest thing to do, but to have the works minister dropping by to look into the problems, is a step in the right direction.

This brings questions on the situation. What happened to the previous pledges made on resolving the residents’ woes? Were the problems swept under the carpet as soon as after victory was achieved at the polls? Why is it that only now the problems are being cast again in the spotlight?

What does it take for their plight to be looked after? A byelection?
