POLICE are investigating two reports of allegedly slanderous statements made against Sungai Kandis by-election PKR candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, which have been widely shared on social media.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Baharuddin Mat Taib said the reports were lodged by Zawawi at the Klang Selatan District Police Headquarters on July 31.

“No one has been arrested so far. Police are probing the case. We have yet to obtain more details on the case.

“Several reports were lodged in Klang.

“(Klang police) are investigating the case,” he at Seksyen 19 here yesterday.

Baharuddin said Sungai Kandis byelection independent candidate and retiree K. Murthy had also lodged a report in Klang over blackmail.

“He claims that several people had approached him (with criminal intentions).”

He said despite the reports lodged, the by-election’s campaign period had been smooth, with no untoward incidents.

“The situation (has been) peaceful throughout the campaign period.

“Police are, however, always prepared for any event,” Baharuddin said.

Meanwhile, Zawawi had urged the authorities to investigate the owner of the Facebook account Unit Media Wangsa Maju and the Twitter account @MHSBI1, which allegedly spread the slanderous statements.

He said the widelyspread statements were baseless and deliberately created by irresponsible groups to taint his reputation.

The first report was on allegations that Zawawi supported a belly-dancing performance to collect donations for Tabung Harapan Malaysia.

The second report was on an allegation that he misappropriated funds while serving at a school in Sungai Bertih, Klang in 1998.
