LIEW Daren has said he will be more than honoured to represent Malaysia at this month’s Asian Games in Indonesia. The 31-year-old former BAM player surprised the badminton fraternity when he defied all odds to reach the semi-finals of this week’s World Championships in Nanjing, China.

Following his explosive form, BAM admitted that they would consider naming the 2012 French Open champion for the Asiad.

Daren, however, does want to dwell on his Asian Games chances, especially after picking up an ankle injury, which saw him struggle in the semi-final stage, before losing 21-16, 21-5 to Japan’s Kento Momota yesterday,

Daren said: “I’ll be more than happy to play for Malaysia, but let’s allow BAM to make that decision.

“Right now, I want to rest and enjoy being in this moment. It’s like a dream come true.

“About my injury, there is still some pain. I will get it checked once I’m back in Malaysia,” said Daren.

Despite his age, Daren could still be a valuable member to the squad given his current form, and he can also be viewed as a leader in the absence of Lee Chong Wei.

Since Chong Wei’s pullout, BAM had named four men’s singles — Lee Zii Jia, Leong Jun Hao, Soong Joo Ven and Cheam June Wei — for the Asiad.

BAM, however, confirmed they still have until the team managers’ meeting on Aug 16 to make any change to the squad.

The national body reiterated that Daren, along with Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, are part of the list submitted to the Olympic Council of Malaysia earlier to be considered for the Asiad.

I’ll be more than happy to play for Malaysia, but let’s allow BAM to make that decision.
