‘NO PROOF OF ZAHID’S ALLEGED WEALTH’

MACC will only investigate if there is evidence, says minister

-

THERE is no evidence that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had RM230 million in assets, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

He said the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) would only investigate the allegation if there was evidence.

He said this in a parliamentary written reply to Bukit

Gelugor member of parliament Ramkarpal

Singh.

News portal Malaysiakini reported that Ramkarpal had asked if the government would investigate the allegation.

Allegations on Zahid’s wealth surfaced in August last year when he was involved in a public spat with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Zahid had accused Dr Mahathir of having Indian roots and offered an old version of the latter’s identity card as evidence. Malaysiakini reported that Dr Mahathir had shot back by accusing Zahid of making an asset declaration in 1996, which amounted to nine figures.

At the time, Dr Mahathir was Umno president and Zahid was the Youth chief.

Following this, Zahid accused Dr Mahathir of lying and welcomed investigations by MACC. He said he was only a businessman, a public-listed company’ s chief executive officer and chairperson of Bank Simpanan Nasional.
