You must be kidding about allowing sale of kidneys for transplants

- A healthy lifestyle to ward off diabetes and hypertension THOMAS FOO Subang Jaya, Selangor

was a letter published in a newspaper that called for the sale of kidneys for transplant patients to be permitted.

It is not appropriate to allow this as this may be exploited by unscrupulous individuals.

People may be pressured by their relatives to give up one of their kidneys.

Drug addicts may sell their kidneys in desperation.

Many of these poor people, after such exploitation, will be left on their own without financial support to nurse their health.

It is better to adopt the following actions to reduce kidney failure: as the majority of kidney failure cases are due to complications from it; and,

for diabetes and hypertension, which will enable people to take medication and adopt a healthy lifestyle when they have diabetes or hypertension.

This will prevent kidney failure, blindness, stroke and limb amputations.

My wife has two aunts who have diabetes and both have avoided complications from the disease by following their doctor’s advice and adopting a healthy lifestyle to keep their blood glucose under control.

She also had a female cousin who died in her 50s a few years ago because she did not control her blood glucose.

She suffered from blindness and kidney failure before she died, after suffering from diabetes for several years.

I am 70 and have had hypertension for more than 30 years and have diabetes since three years ago, but by taking my medication and adopting a healthy lifestyle, I lead a normal life.

It is important to treat diabetes and hypertension early with medicine and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The Association of Diabetes of Malaysia said there were 2.5 million people 18 and above who are diabetic.

The association said 1.25 million of them were unaware of it.

We hope the government will have more campaigns to create awareness about diabetes and hypertension.

This will enable patients to have early treatment and adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent kidney failure, strokes, limb amputation and blindness.

Permitting the sale of kidneys will have grave consequences and should not be allowed.
