BAM to make statement on Chong Wei later
Chong Wei is still undergoing treatment in Taiwan, and it will take a few more weeks before any detailed statement can be made about him.
This was stated by BAM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria yesterday.
Speaking to the media following a sponsorship event at the AirAsia headquarters, Norza said Chong Wei has been in touch with BAM, and a statement will be made in the next couple of weeks.
“For now, Chong Wei is still undergoing treatment, give him some time.
“Perhaps in the next couple of weeks, we will be able to make a statement,” said Norza.
Earlier, NSTP Sport reported that Chong Wei, 36, is suffering from a serious illness that could bring his illustrious career to a premature end.
News of the three-time Olympic silver medallist made headlines, when Chong Wei skipped a week of training since returning from the Indonesia Open last month.
Chong Wei, who won his 12th Malaysia Open title a week before the Indonesia Open, lost in the semi-finals to Japan’s Kento Momota (the same player he defeated in the Malaysia Open final a week earlier). Momota won the World Championships crown in Nanjing on Sunday.
Because of the illness, Chong Wei had to withdraw from the World Championships and also the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia.
Since then, many top stars, including five-time world champion Lin Dan of China and Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, have wished Chong Wei a speedy recovery, as they hope to see him returning to court soon.
