CABINET ministers, government administrative staff and Pakatan Harapan members of parliament must declare their assets within three months of taking their oath of office.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Deputy Chief Commissioner (prevention) Datuk Shamsun Baharin Mohd Jamil said this was decided at the Special Cabinet Committee on AntiCorruption chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently.

He said the committee held monthly meetings and had decided on measures to tackle graft.

“Previously, this (declaration of assets) was done only at the federal level and asset declaration forms were submitted only to the prime minister.

“At the state level, forms were given to the menteri besar. However, following the latest decision, they will have to submit copies of the declaration forms to MACC.”

He said the government agreed to have asset declaration forms uploaded to the MACC website.

Shamsun Baharin said this after a corruption-free pledge ceremony for state assemblymen and state government officials here yesterday.

Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu led the pledge-taking ceremony. Present was State Secretary Datuk Mohd Gazali Jalal.

Shamsun Baharin said MACC had submitted its proposal to the committee regarding gifts received by administrative officials.

He said there was a need for those who received gifts to declare them to ensure greater accountability and to protect the integrity and professionalism of officers and politicians at the state and federal levels.

On the corruption-free pledge ceremony, he said the Perak government was the second state after Melaka to take the pledge.

He said credit should be given to the leadership of both states for pushing ahead with the government agenda of fighting graft.

Ahmad Faizal said the pledge was the first step by his administration to fulfil Pakatan Harapan’s promise of a corruption-free and accountable government.

He said the state government planned to compel state assemblymen and senior officers of government-linked companies to declare their assets too.

“So far, all state executive council members have declared their assets to me. The next step is for all the others to do the same.”
