The many ways to save the environment

- The environmental message and influence others; and, BULBIR SINGH Seremban, Negri Sembilan

is an American Indian saying, “If you cut the trees, the sky will fall”.

It makes great sense, but unfortunately not, it seems, to those who have power to stop it.

There is no doubt that human beings need nature to live. So, we need to nurture nature.

We must show we care for the environment by not harming it. In this way, we can strengthen our ecosystem.

Illegal logging and other harmful activity disrupt the ecological balance. It is our responsibility to preserve the environment and wildlife.

As a consumer advocate, I feel there should be more campaigns to save the environment.

We can start with our children. We can teach them about the importance of all forms of life forms and how they contribute to the ecological balance.

We can teach them how to dispose of waste effectively. Hopefully, they will grow up to be responsible citizens than us.

We can participate in government initiatives and campaigns or support the environmental causes of non-governmental organisations and environmental groups.

Use our rights as citizens and consumers. As citizens, we have the right to participate in the formulation of government policies.

Consider taking these steps:

life and renew our bond with nature. Without respect for nature and its biodiversity, there will be no desire to protect them; that all living things have a right to live on this planet and that we should do no harm to them;

our environmental awareness and knowledge. It would be good to read up on local and global environmental issues;

the 3 “Rs” — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (in order of sequence). The sequence is important as source reduction is usually the best way to minimise wastage;

to energy-efficient habits, and where possible, equip your home with eco-friendly electric-saving solutions.
