KOTA KINABALU: A mother was sentenced to 30 years’ jail and fined RM100,000 by the Sessions Court here on two counts of abusing her two children.

Zulimerryana Asmat, 32, pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read to her before judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad.

In the first charge, the jobless woman from Kampung Menunggui, Kota Belud, was accused of abusing her daughter, 11, from Jan 1 to July 31.

In the second charge, she is accused of abusing her son, 9, about 12pm on July 31.

The accused allegedly committed the offences at an unnumbered house in Kampung Sarang in Kota Belud.

Ainul imposed a 15-year jail sentence and RM50,000 fine, in default six months’ jail for each count.

The court ordered her to serve her sentence consecutively from the day of her arrest.

According to the facts of the case, an officer from the Kota Belud Welfare Services Department had, on July 31 about 12pm, gone to the accused’s house to pick up the two kids after they were suspected to have been neglected.

The officer had found the accused’s son naked and chained. She and the children’s stepfather were at home at that time.

Investigation revealed several people had seen her beating her children.

In the same court, Zulimerryana’s neighbour, Mel Bol Leng @ Adam Abdul, 50, pleaded not guilty to committing sexual offences against an 11-year-old girl.

The Indonesian had allegedly sexually assaulted the victim in November.

He was accused of committing the offence charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The court fixed Sept 4 for case management against Mel.

Both accused were unrepresented.
