Holistic education at TAR UC
SINCE its establishment in 1969, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) has carved a reputation for academic excellence and holistic education that is wellrecognised by the industry and academia.
Over the past 49 years, TAR UC has educated more than 190,000 graduates, who have become professionals, captains of industries, national leaders and successful entrepreneurs in Malaysia and around the world.
This respectable track record is correlated with TAR UC’s innovative pathway that has been refined along with market changes and industry needs to ensure that the education that students receive at TAR UC will shape them into tomorrow’s leaders.
The academic pathway in TAR UC is structured to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to seamlessly join the industry or assume higher studies. After SPM, there are two pathways for school leavers to choose from depending on the their career aspiration and ambition. School leavers who prefer to prepare themselves academically for undergraduate studies may start with pre-university programme.
At TAR UC, there are foundation as well as the A-Level pre-university programmes to give school leavers a solid foundation to advance to undergraduate studies.
TAR UC’s foundation programme is an intensive one-year programme that aims to prepare students to progress seamlessly to TAR UC’s bachelor degree programmes.
Upon completion of either TAR UC’s foundation or A-Level programme, students can proceed to enter Year 1 of TAR UC’s three-year or four-year bachelor degree programmes, subject to meeting the minimum entry requirement.
There are close to 50 bachelor degree programmes being offered by TAR UC for students to choose from and they are highly regarded by industries for their academic rigour and high standards.
Another pathway is through TAR UC’s diploma programmes for school leavers who have a clear direction as to what they want to pursue as their careers.
There are more than 50 specialised diploma programmes delivered by seven faculties, namely the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Built Environment, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries.
The duration of the diploma programmes range from two years to two and a half years.
Upon completion of the diploma programme, students will be given credit transfers, which will enable them to enter Year 2 of the corresponding bachelor degree programmes, subject to meeting the minimum entry requirement and thereby shortening the duration for them to complete their bachelor degree programme at TAR UC.
The diploma and bachelor degree programmes are highly intensive and aim to develop critical skills required by the industries and are also accredited by many global and local professional bodies, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM), the Board of Valuers, Appraisers and Estate Agents Malaysia (BOVAEA) and many others.
School leavers with STPM/UEC qualifications have the advantage of proceeding directly to Year 1 of the bachelor degree programme in TAR UC, subject to meeting the minimum entry requirements of the programme.
There is also a Dual Award arrangement to a number of bachelor degree programmes with partner universities such as Campbell University in the United States as well as Coventry University in the United Kingdom.
The Dual Award offers students an invaluable overseas learning experience to expose them to global trends, foster cross-cultural perspectives and an added advantage in increasing their local and global employability with an additional globally recognised qualification.
With the Dual Award arrangement, students will be able to obtain two bachelor’s degrees, one from TAR UC and the other from the partner university, either by completing the programme wholly in TAR UC or spending one semester at the partner university overseas.
TAR UC also offers postgraduate programmes for students who would like to pursue higher studies after obtaining their bachelor’s degree. Currently, TAR UC is offering Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Investment Management (MIM), Master of Corporate Governance (MCG) and Master of Science in the areas of life sciences and physical science.
