In pursuit of peace and prosperity
FIVE deserving young adults from Malaysia recently received the prestigious Australia Awards Asean Scholarships to undertake masterslevel study in fields contributing to Asean’s agenda of peace, prosperity and social development.
The scholarships, which funded 50 young people from across Asean (five per country), were an initiative of the Asean-Australia Special Summit held in Sydney in March.
The Malaysian recipients — Yeoh Jie Shuang, Aizat Shamsuddin, Rashidah Kamaluddin, Hon Kah Mun and Karl Nadzarin — received their scholarships from Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop in a ceremony held at Monash University Malaysia.
Also present was Monash University president and pro vice-chancellor Professor Andrew Walker.
Aizat, 27, will pursue the Masters of International Law and International Relations programme at the University of New South Wales. His area of focus is human rights and the prevention of violent extremism in Muslim-majority countries.
“My dream of studying in Australia has been made possible. I am excited at contributing to Malaysia in terms of peace and security,” he said, adding that Australia has a very good education system with universities listed in world rankings.
