Role of statistics in advancing science
University’s School of Mathematical Sciences has hosted the fourth edition of the International Statistical Conference (ISM-IV) themed Statistics for Scientific Advancement and Innovation in collaboration with the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The two-day event featured three keynote sessions and six parallel sessions conducted by researchers and academia from Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States.
Packed with information on applied, computational and circular statistics, mathematical modelling plus applications of statistics to the insurance industry and the use of statistics in monitoring sustainable development, the conference acted as a platform for academics and professionals from various industries to gain a better grasp of the role statistics plays in advancing sciZULITA ence and innovation.
School of Mathematical Sciences dean Ho Chee Kit, who is also ISM-IV chairman, said: “There is no denying that mathematicians and statisticians play an important role to help unlock the governing patterns and behavior of the continuous supply of data and information captured throughout the entire history of our existence.”
He added: “This event promotes collaboration and sharing of knowledge, providing networking opportunities among leading experts. It also encourages interactions and intensive discussions among researches from universities, government agencies and practitioners around the region.”
ISM-IV participants shared the latest updates on the development and use of Sustainable Development Goals indicators in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with four presentations on Statistics for Sustainable Development. The presentations were followed by a keynote from Sunway Group founder and chairman, Jeffrey Cheah, who has been committed to champion sustainability at the corporate, social and individual levels.
In his closing ceremony remarks, Cheah talked about the initiatives undertaken by Sunway to
