-

THE most prestigious annual advertising award ceremony, the Kancil Awards, has just ended and the advertising industries’ most creative have been awarded the coveted accolades. The Kancil Awards has been celebrating creative advertising works from all over the nation in an effort to recognise home-grown creative excellence in advertising. The awards are divided into two parts, namely the Kancil Awards, which sees entries from renowned corporations and organisations, and Student Kancil, an opportunity for students to send in their work to be assessed by industry experts and win acclaimed awards.

This year marks the ninth consecutive year in which The One Academy has won the most number of awards and leading number of gold.

2018 was indeed a marvellous year for The One Academy as it saw an astounding 68 awards being brought home by its students and lecturers, including the honoured Creative School of The Year award.

These awards were won from the four categories, namely special awards, ideas category, craft category and special category. Each group is further divided into a variety of sections, such as Best Print and Poster, Best Ad, Best Digital and more.

This time round, students of The One Academy received five gold, 15 silver, 12 bronze and 33 merit awards. On top of that, two students bagged the Student of the Year Award. These wins stand as a testament that The One Academy is dedicated to producing fine talents while staying true to its core belief and living up to the motto “Masters Train Masters”.

The One Academy founder and principal Tatsun Hoi believed that this was the right step in the direction of cementing the organisation as a top creative educational institution of international standards.

Nathaniel Himawan, who won the Student of the Year Award, said the best thing about The One Academy was “knowing the lecturer is probably the best thing, because some of the lecturers are from the industry itself. So, they really know what happens in the industry”.

His advice for others is: “Do not be afraid to ask (questions) and also know your mentors. Some lecturers are really willing to help you even in subjects that they don’t teach.”

He said first- and second-year students are shy or even hesitant to ask questions and this would hinder their ability to learn.

Quah Phaik Hoon, the other winner of the Student of the Year Award, said she was surprised upon receiving the award.

When asked how she prepared for the competition, she stated that most of her preparation was mentally.

“Although I knew the workload was going to be tough, I kept telling myself that it will be worth it as I would gain a great experience and exposure” she said.

Her advice for future participants is to “just go for it”.

She said prior to entering the competition, she too was doubtful of how things would play out and if she would make it. But upon joining, she did not regret it one bit.

The One Academy is committed to providing the best art education programmes and continues to nurture its students through its “Masters Train Masters” coaching philosophy, which has been practised for the past 27 years, by providing diploma and degree courses, namely Advertising and Graphic Design, Digital Animation, Digital Media Design, Film Visual Effects, Interior Architecture and Design, Illustration, Fine Arts and Paris Fashion Design, and Pattern Making.
