BAKER’S ’CREAM DE LA CREME’ OF PATRIOTISM
Kedah man took five hours, using 2,200 cream puffs to create design
MALAYSIANS’ creative expression of patriotism goes into full gear in August, as they prepare to welcome the National Day celebrations.
For baker Azrul Nizam Azali, 26, he conveys his love for country through food, and came up with cream puffs arranged bearing the likeness of the Jalur Gemilang.
“It took me about five hours to prepare the Jalur Gemilang cream puffs, and this includes mixing the dough, baking and arranging them to look like the Jalur Gemilang.”
Operating from Kampung Tengah Sungai Yan here, Azrul said it took 2,200 cream puffs to create his patriotic pastries.
He said last year he made 1,500 cupcakes and arranged them to look like the Jalur Gemilang. He also baked a giant Merdeka cake.
He said it was challenging to arrange the Jalur Gemilang cream puffs as they needed to be arranged properly.
“However, after studying the nation’s flag and having made a few attempts, alhamdulillah (praise be to God), I got it right.
“I used 5kg of wheat flour and food colouring to make the pastries.”
Azrul said he sold 60 cream puffs for RM25.
Orders are limited until Aug 31. He said he was making a 350g cake bearing a picture of former prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj to be sold at RM15 a piece.
“I was born after Malaysia achieved its independence, so by making pastries with the National Day theme, it is a way for me to liven up the celebration, as well as to encourage the public to appreciate the true meaning of independence.
“Since I opened orders for my cream puffs on Aug 15, many customers, including those from other states, have placed their orders.
“I will work hard to fulfil their orders even though it means that I will only get a few hours of rest a day.”
