MCA launches ‘Balakong Declaration’

-

KAJANG: MCA yesterday launched the “Balakong Declaration”, touted as a reformation of the party following its defeat in the 14th General Election.

Its president, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, said via a new chapter in the party’s politics, it pledged to play a role as a constructive opposition in carrying out reforms and unloading political baggage.

The Balakong Declaration, he said, symbolised the new MCA, which had transformed to regain the support of the people and build a new political position.

“Beginning with using our own flag and logo in the Balakong byelection and the Balakong Declaration, MCA is confident that voters will respond well to its pragmatic actions and return to support the party.”

He said the declaration contained five items, including reviewing the past and mapping the future for the people, empowering its political power with other political parties and associations, and upholding MCA’s stature as an equal.”

On whether the declaration signalled MCA’s intention to leave Barisan Nasional, Liow replied in the negative.

“No, the declaration shows that MCA is a party that is free like any other party which has its own struggles. We can cooperate with other parties that share the same agenda and focus.”

Under the declaration, MCA would uphold the law, champion democracy and freedom, and fight for justice.

“We will champion an administration that is transparent, efficient and clean, as well as aim to serve as an effective and rational checks and balances opposition,” Liow said.
