THE Selangor government’s initiatives, like Initiatif Peduli Rakyat (IPR), and benefits for those born in the state, are better than the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BRIM) handouts.

This was the opinion of Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Seri Setia by-election Halimey Abu Bakar.

He claimed that in the 10 days of his campaigning, he found that the people in the state were more interested in IPR and the MyKiss programme rather than BR1M.

He said most of the applicants for the benefits were women.

IPR, or Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) as it was initially known, was developed after the then Pakatan Rakyat took over Selangor in 2008 from Barisan Nasional.

MES was rebranded as IPR in January last year.

The initiatives under IPR were mostly funded with the state revenue and it was said that the Selangor government was working on implementing new initiatives to help the people.

Halimey said out of 53,492 voters in the Seri Setia constituency, about 50.42 per cent, or 26,972, were women, and 30 per cent out of that number have benefited from IPR.

“Women who are qualified will receive benefits under the Selangor government’s programmes,” he said, adding that programmes to increase the household income of women would be introduced.

“Not forgetting the single mothers, we are working with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to help them.”
