ANANNY pleaded not guilty to hurting a baby, who was placed under her care last week, at the magistrate’s court here yesterday.

Mas Haini Mohd Zaini claimed trial to the charge read to her before Magistrate Che Rohana Ismail.

She allegedly committed the offence on 10-month-old Mohd Ayden in the living room of a house in Taman Sri Serdang, Kepala Batas, near here, on Aug 20 at 9.30am. She was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Nor Aziah Hasan asked the court to set bail at RM6,000.

Mas Haini, in pleading for leniency, told the court that she had two children and only her husband had a permanent job.

Che Rohana set bail at RM6,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 28 for mention.

Mas Haini’s family members were spotted in the public gallery. When her case was called up, her father stood up to address the court.

“Yang Arif, saya bapa dia (Your honour, I am her father),” he said before he was interjected by the court police, who asked him to sit down.

Mas Haini’s legal counsel, Mohd Redzuan Mohamed Yusoff, who just arrived from Kuala Lumpur, said he managed to change the mention date to Sept 21.

Asked if he was able to get the bail reduced, he said: “The court had decided on RM6,000. Any changes will involve a lot of documentation.

“As such, the bail stays.”

It was reported that Mas Haini allegedly pinched the victim after he refused to stop crying, leaving bruises on his stomach and chest.

The incident was witnessed by her 4-year-old son.

She was arrested after the victim’s mother took her son to Kepala Batas Hospital for treatment. Doctors then informed police that the child might have been abused.
