Physiotherapy vital in healthcare

-

APHYSIOTHERAPIST is an important member of the healthcare team, helping patients of all ages — from small babies to the frail elderly. Focusing on human movement as a vital part of one’s health and wellbeing, a physiotherapist’s priority is to resolve pain, stabilise an injury and prevent it from recurring.

The Diploma in Physiotherapy programme at Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare College encompasses comprehensive learning with emphasis on hands-on practice and clinical placements in accredited hospitals, such as the Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care Group of hospitals.

An established college with more than 20 years of experience, it is known for its excellence in nursing education and its allied health science programmes.

Physiotherapy students will undergo clinical placements, which exceeds the 1,000 hours requirement by the World Confederation of Physiotherapy.

Students will learn to treat patients while minimising risks, ensure their safety at all times and work within a legal and ethical framework.

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to demonstrate customer focused delivery of healthcare, assess the patients to set up effective treatment plans and carry out appropriate therapies.

They can progress to an undergraduate degree in physiotherapy and their career path includes becoming physiotherapists in hospitals, non-governmental organisations, wellness and health centres, fitness clubs, nursing homes and with sports teams.

Students have the advantage of learning from three hospitals in Malaysia (Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Ara Damansara Medical Centre and Parkcity Medical Centre) and also have the opportunity for attachments at Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare hospitals in Australia and Indonesia.

Entry requirements are five credits in the SPM/O-level or Equivalent, with a credit in Mathematics, one science subject and three credits in any other subject, and a pass in Bahasa Malaysia, English and History.

The college was awarded the 6Star Outstanding Rating by the Higher Education Ministry in the MyQUEST 2016/2017 quality rating of colleges.

The college also offers ILETS and MUET preparatory courses for students to achieve the required band before enrolling into university. For SPM school-leavers who are taking repeat exams in July and November, they can enrol in an intensive three-month programme.

Working nurses can enrol in a sixmonth Post-Basic in Critical Care Nursing, Renal Nursing, Oncology Nursing and Perioperative Nursing programmes.

The college’s new Setia Alam campus is equipped with state-ofthe-art facilities that can accommodate up to 2,000 students.

Among the programmes available at the college are Bachelor of Science (Hons) Contemporary Nursing 2+0; Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing (Assistant Nurse Conversion) from the School of Nursing; Diploma in Medical Assistant; Diploma in Healthcare Service; Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology; and, Advance Diploma in Trauma and Emergency Care from the School of Allied Health Sciences.

There are three intakes in a year — April, July and October. Registration is open for the October intake. The college is open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Students can walk in to find out more about the courses.
