‘PETRON NOT THE ONLY SUPPLIER’

No limit to number of fuel suppliers for govt vehicles, says Finance Ministry

PETRON Fuel International Sdn Bhd is not the sole supplier of petrol and diesel for the government’s vehicles, said the Finance Ministry in a statement yesterday.

It said Petronas and Shell had been the suppliers of petrol and diesel for the government since 1997 to cater to the needs of official vehicles.

“The appointment of Petron was made administratively as it is related to operation matters and does not involve any financial implication for the government.

“Through the approval, the government has other options like Petronas, Shell and Petron.

“This can boost healthy competition among fuel suppliers.”

It said the government did not limit the number of suppliers.

The statement was referring to a letter on the appointment of Petron as the oil supplier for the government’s vehicles, which has gone viral.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, who reportedly issued the letter, claimed that Petron’s appointment was linked to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s son, Mirzan Mahathir.

Lokman criticised the move, claiming that in the past, the government appointed only the national petroleum company, Petronas, as the fuel supplier for the government’s vehicles.

The appointment of Petron was made administratively...

He urged the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission to investigate the matter.

In 2013, Petron Malaysia Refining and Marketing Bhd informed Bursa Malaysia that Mirzan had no share or role in the company.
