Man gets 5 years’ jail, rotan for raping step-granddaughter
KOTA BARU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a 69year-old man to five years’ jail after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his 7-year-old disabled step-granddaughter last Saturday.
Judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin meted out the sentence after the rubber tapper pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was alleged to have sexually assaulted the girl at their home in Ketereh at 11.30am.
The accused was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and whipping.
The accused, who was unrepresented, requested for a lighter sentence, citing old age.
Deputy public prosecutor Norazlinawati Mohd Arshad, however, disagreed, saying that punishment was a deterrent.
“The accused is a grandfather who should be taking care of his grandchildren, especially if the person is disabled,” she said.
Ahmad Bazli ordered the accused to serve five years’ jail and the punishment to run from the day he was arrested.
According to the facts of the case, the girl’s father, upon returning from a nearby clinic, looked for the victim.
He later caught his stepfather and daughter in bed.
The father lodged a report at the Kok Lanas police station.
