DESPITE Malaysia’s continuous efforts to reduce drug-related abuse cases, our prisons are full of those caught for this offence.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said last year, over 25,000 drugrelated cases were detected by the National Anti-Drugs Agency.

“There were 18,440 new cases and out of that, 7,482 were repeat offenders.

“The anti-drug programmes have been ineffective with prisons being full of those caught under drug-related charges,” she said at a community outreach programme organised to mark Universiti Selangor Open Day here yesterday.

Dr Wan Azizah said she was concerned about Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the time he spent in prison.

“I was concerned that there were many drug-related offenders near my husband,” she said.

When asked about Pakatan Harapan’s chances in the Seri Setia by-election, she said “god-willing”.

Seri Setia PH candidate Halimey Abu Bakar was also present at the outreach event. The PKR member and Dr Wan Azizah met and greeted the public.

Halimey is contesting against Pas candidate Dr Halimah Ali in the Seri Setia by-election on Sept 8.

The seat was left vacant after incumbent assemblyman and Selangor executive councillor Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin died on Aug 2.
