The Seri Setia seat fell vacant after incumbent assemblyman and Selangor executive councillor Professor Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin, died on Aug 2 following a battle with cancer.

Shaharuddin won the state seat with a 19,372-vote majority by defeating the candidates from Barisan Nasional Yusoff M Haniff, Pas’ Modh Ghazali Daud and independent candidate S. Vigneswaran.
