2 friends charged with having counterfei­t money

ALOR STAR: Two friends were jointly charged at the Sessions Court here yesterday with producing and possessing counterfei­t RM100 notes last month.

Intan Zaleha Mohd Zaki, 24, and Ahmad Helmi Osman, 26, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out to them before judge Juraidah Abbas.

The duo, with another person still at large, were charged with possessing six pieces of counterfei­t RM100 notes with the intention of using them as genuine money.

Intan Zaleha, a restaurant assistant and Ahmad Helmi, a mechanic, faced a second charge of possessing items allegedly used for producing counterfei­t notes.

Ahmad Helmi pleaded not guilty to a charge of having in his possession three fake RM100 notes.

The duo were alleged to have committed the offence at a house in Kampung Budi Mukim Lesong, Pokok Sena, at 3pm on Aug 5.

They were charged under Section 489 (C) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, and under Section 489 (D) of the same code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years.

The court allowed a bail of RM8,000 with one surety for each of the accused for the joint charges and RM4,000 in one surety for the third charge faced by Ahmad Helmi.

Deputy public prosecutor Rehab Abdul Shukur appeared for the prosecutio­n. The court fixed Oct 4 for mention to allow the duo to appoint a lawyer.
