just one year of involvement in shooting, Nurul Syasya Nadiah Mohd Arifin has become Johor’s latest hotshot.

She bagged two gold medals in the Malaysia Games in Chemor, Perak yesterday while setting records in the women’s individual 10m air pistol and team event at the Amanjaya Shooting Complex.

Nurul Syasya, 16, amassed 526 points in the individual 10m air pistol to break Kuala Lumpur’s Siti Sarah Mohd Ibrahim’s 18year-old record of 375.

Selangor’s Dina Batrisyia Adi Azhar posted 559 for silver while Nur Natasha Shahira Rosli from Pahang took the bronze (558).

In the team event, Nurul Syasya, with Khairunnabiha Baharin and Mumtazah Syahiidah Shamsuri, collected 1,639 points to set a new record and erase the 1,633 mark set by Pahang’s Noreffani Abdul Malick, Nik Nur Nadhirah and Siti Nur Masitah M Badrin.

Silver went to Perak (Anis Ayuni Ahmad Khairi, Nor Aisyah Azmee and Nurul Izzah Ahmad Khairi) with 1,633 points while Sarawak’s (Beatrice Thieadro Lises, Delphine Chung Qi and Stephanie Sim) shot 1,630 for bronze.

“This is my first Malaysia Games, and I am glad to have won the gold.

“I rarely win gold in the national circuit, so the win today is very meaningful for me,” said Nurul Syasya.

She developed an interest for the sport after watching her father and mother, Mohd Arifin Sobikin and Zainorida Ngarip, in action as members of the Batu Pahat Shooting Association.

Meanwhile, Pahang added three gold to their collection yesterday through the men’s team 50m prone (Izzuddin Muhammad Shafri, Muhammad Al-Zawawie Benhar and Muhammad Azril Hakim Nor Azman), men’s team 25m standard pistol (Azrul Akmal Zulkefli, Low Wei Chern and Muhammad Ridwan Awaluddin) and men’s individual 50m rifle prone (Izzuddin Muhammad Shafri).
