‘Opposition must aid govt on MA63’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition must play a role in helping the Pakatan Harapan government secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend the Constitution to deliver what was promised to Sabah and Sarawak in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa said their differences should not be a hindrance when it involved common interests.

“Talk is going around that the (PH) government for now can’t do anything on the matter as it needs a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

“I don’t think that this is a valid excuse. The opposition has to be prepared to support the government on matters of national interest that benefit the people and the country.

“If the matter benefits the people and the country, then the opposition has to be prepared to help the prime minister realise his vision.

“In the past, the opposition opposed everything.

“They opposed for the sake of opposing. Even good things were rejected.

“We have to stop such practices,” he said on Facebook.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was recently quoted as saying that the Federal Government would need a twothirds majority in Parliament to amend the Constitution to deliver what was promised to Sabah and Sarawak in MA63.

Dr Mahathir had said the Federal Government would have to study how it could generate support in Parliament in order to restore Sabah and Sarawak’s rights, as per MA63.

Annuar, meanwhile, said he hoped Dr Mahathir would kickstart a discussion among members of parliament to ensure that the MA63 issue was tackled.

Dr Mahathir, he said, was wellversed on the Constitution, especially on matters relating to the country’s formation and national policies.
