Teachers may soon get to assess school heads

SIMPANG RENGGAM: The Education Ministry will study a proposal to enable educators to evaluate school administrators, principals and headmasters.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said before this, the annual performance of principals and headmasters was only evaluated by district education departments.

“Several years ago, a few government agencies conducted a 360-degree evaluation to enable lower-ranking personnel to evaluate their superiors.

“This is not something out of the ordinary and can be done. We want to hear the voices of educators at all levels,” said Maszlee, who is also Simpang Renggam member of parliament, after officiating at the Lifelong Learning Carnival at Dewan Muafakat Majlis Daerah Simpang Renggam here yesterday.

Present were Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Mohd Gazali Abas, Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Ismail Abd Aziz and Higher Education director-general Datin Paduka Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir.

Maszlee, however, noted that the ministry would first have to study the mechanism to implement the suggestion to ensure its impact on the school administration system was minimal.

Maszlee also commented on a viral video clip, which featured Melaka Education executive councillor Noor Effandi Ahmad uttering the word bodoh (stupid).

He said he had to see the video in its entirety before issuing any statements.
