Ami, Fad’l new CEOs of Maybank Kim Eng, Maybank IB

KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) has announced the appointmen­t of Datin Ami Moris as Maybank Kim Eng group chief executive officer (CEO) effective yesterday.

She takes over from Datuk John Chong Eng Chuan.

Chong has assumed the position of Maybank group CEO of community financial services.

Ami will be responsibl­e for overseeing investment banking, brokerage and derivative­s businesses in Malaysia and across Maybank Kim Eng’s regional platform.

Ami joined Maybank Investment Bank Bhd (Maybank IB) in 2009 as equity markets head.

She played a leading role in the successful acquisitio­n, integratio­n, and subsequent management of Singapore-based Kim

Eng Holdings, which transforme­d Maybank IB from a single-market entity into one of Asean’s leading investment banks.

Under her leadership, Maybank Kim Eng became Asean’s largest equities franchise and was voted best broker in Southeast Asia for the past five consecutiv­e years.

In Malaysia, Ami guided the business from a bottom 10 position to top three.

Prior to her latest appointmen­t, Ami served as Maybank Kim Eng chief operating officer, overseeing the functions of the office of the CEO, driving business strategy and management of the 10-country operating platform covering Asean + 6 (Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea), Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Meanwhile, Fad’l Mohamed has been a p p o i n t e d a s M a ybank IB CEO, also taking over from Chong.

Fad’l joined Maybank IB as deputy CEO in March 2015.

He was primarily responsibl­e for overseeing the investment banking and advisory business in Malaysia.

Fad’l began his career as a lawyer with Messrs Rashid & Lee before joining the Securities Commission in 1993.

Thereafter, he moved to Dresdner Kleinwort Benson, an investment bank.

In 2004, Fad’l founded Maestro Capital Sdn Bhd, a licensed corporate finance adviser focusing on mergers and acquisitio­ns, fundraisin­g and initial public offerings.

He led the firm for more than 10 years prior to joining Maybank IB.
