THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will provide assistance to families of the six firemen who died during a search-and-rescue mission in Puchong, Kuala Lumpur.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said they would look into the matter, with priority given to the victims’ children.

“Besides providing assistance to the families, we will also focus on the welfare and education of the children. We will extend help so that the children’s education can be taken care of,” Dr Wan Azizah, who is the deputy prime minister, said here yesterday.

Dr Wan Azizah paid a visit to the family home of victim Adnan Othman in Taman Jaya Lukut here.

Adnan’s wife, Shahmiza Salleh, 32, said she was grateful to Dr Wan Azizah for visiting them.

“I am touched that she could visit us amid her busy schedule. She also shared words of encouragement and advised me to be strong so I can move on.

“I have accepted this loss as fate. My focus now is to raise my two daughters and I hope all Malaysians will pray for us.”

Adnan and Shahmiza have two daughters — Nur Aisyah Damia, 4, and Aliyah Maisara, 2.

Shahmiza said she would return to her home in Shah Alam next week before resuming work as an educator at an institute in Sungai Buloh, Selangor.

Adnan, 33, was among the six Fire and Rescue divers who drowned while trying to find a missing teenager, who had fallen into a disused mining pool in Taman Putra Perdana, Puchong, on Wednesday.
