Wan Azizah: No police escorts during campaign, please

-

PORT DICKSON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has requested that no police escorts be deployed during her presence in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) campaign trail here for the Port Dickson byelection.

This is following PH’s pledge not to abuse government machinery and assets during the campaign period leading up to the by-election, which will be held on Oct 13.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is campaigning for PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said, however, the police escorts following her were merely discharging their duties to protect her as the country’s deputy prime minister.

“I know we cannot use government machinery and assets to campaign. I am here in my capacity as PKR president.

“Those police officers are escorting me because of the post I’m holding right now. They said it’s their responsibility to protect me,” she said at the meet-andgreet programme with the residents of Kampung Pengkalan Durian in Linggi near here yesterday.

Commenting on single mothers’ aid, which might have been cut or stopped, Dr Wan Azizah gave her assurance to carry out a review of the matter.

“We will see how we can help single mothers.

“But we have to bear in mind that the country has quite a huge debt and we have to strike a balance on that.

“No matter what, we will continue helping the needy and the poor,” she said in a similar programme with the Air Kuning Chinese community in Linggi here.

Dr Wan Azizah called on the voters here to go to the polls on Oct 13 and vote for Anwar to enable him to return to Parliament and help Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in administering the country.

“We want our economy to grow strong and stable. Anwar was once recognised as the best finance minister in the 1990s.

“He can help strengthen the country’s economy when he returns to Parliament,” she said.
