Wide array of catfish dishes to savour

-

KANGAR: Restoran Anjung Keli, which specialises in catfish dishes, is worth a visit, especially for those who like to experience authentic, kampungstyle Malay dishes.

The restaurant, which is run by husband-and-wife team Azali Salleh and Amis Azura Abdul Majid, has attracted many diners, due to the wide variety of dishes.

The menu, which lists up to 30 or 40 items, offers a wide variety of authentic Malay sambal and sauces, kerabu (a kind of salad with vegetables, fruit and sometimes meat or seafood), and ulam (a traditional salad produced from fresh leaves, vegetables or fruits).

Among the most popular dishes are fried catfish, grilled catfish, masak lemak cili padi catfish (or catfish in Coconut Milk with Birds Eye Chilli) and gulai catfish (or curry catfish).

Azali said most of the dishes were based on recipes inherited from his late parents, Salleh Ali and Zaiton Mohd Hanafiah.

“We try to keep the menu as authentic as possible based on the recipes.

“We use various types of herbs and spices, while making sure that the catfish is cleaned properly.

“This is among the secrets for our crispy fried catfish,” he said, adding that his wife, as the head chef, leads the team in the kitchen.

Unlike the typical modern restaurant, Restoran Anjung Keli is nestled near a paddy field and is about four kilometres away from the city centre, and about 30km away from the Kuala Perlis Jetty.

While built with an open concept, the restaurant also provides an air-conditioned dining area. It can accommodate over 300 diners at a time.

It is open from Saturday to Thursday, from 10am to 4.30pm (closed on Friday)

Restoran Anjung Keli is located in Jalan Padang Behor, Behor Pulai, Kangar, Perlis (near Institut Pendidikan Guru Perlis and Institut Latihan Perindustrian Perlis).
