Fuziah: Govt not required to inform Lynas about panel

-

KUANTAN: The government is not required to inform Lynas Corporation Ltd (Lynas) about the setting up of a committee to monitor the rare-earth mining company’s plant in Gebeng here.

Kuantan member of parliament Fuziah Salleh said the matter was announced by Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin in July and that Lynas should be aware of it.

“The matter will be discussed in the cabinet meeting on Wednesday. We shall wait for the outcome,” she said after casting her vote at the Kuantan PKR branch party polls here yesterday.

“I’m confident that the setting up of the committee will benefit to people in Kuantan.

“The committee will not disrupt Lynas’s operations here, but it is to monitor the plant’s (operations) as the government’s priority is to ensure any action or proposal taken by it will not affect investors.”

Earlier, Lynas chief executive officer and managing director Amanda Lacaze was reported as asking the government to provide a complete information on the committee to make it easier for the company to cooperate with the government.

Meanwhile, Fuziah said the evoting process introduced by the central PKR leadership would expedite the tallying of the results.

“Everything is proceeding smoothly. I expect the results to be announced on time... Maybe about 6pm, we can obtain all the results.

“I believe 99 per cent of the votes from the Kuantan branch will be given to ‘Reformasi 20 Tahun’ candidate Rafizi Ramli,” she said.

Fuziah, who is deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, is running against Haniza Talha to lead the PKR Women’s wing. A total of 2,231 Kuantan PKR members were eligible to vote yesterday.
