Woman loses RM4,000 in old coin scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: Excited over the prospect of making a huge profit of up to RM400,000, a woman instead lost more than RM4,000 after being conned by an online agency.

The incident was believed to have unfolded after a 24-year-old victim saw an advertisem­ent offering an old coin collection on Instagram using the handle @agent_ aroush. According to sources, the victim contacted the agency representa­tive via WhatsApp before they reached an agreement to buy 17 pieces of old coins belonging to the victim at a price of almost RM400,000.

He said the victim, who was excited with the offer, was asked to make an initial payment of RM650 for an “Incoming Fee”.

“The victim was then once again was asked to make another payment for an ‘Exchange Fee’ transactio­n into the same bank account on the same day. The next day, the victim was again asked to deposit more money for some other transactio­ns.”

Sources said the victim became suspicious after the buyer again asked her to deposit more money by giving other reasons, threatenin­g to expose the victim’s personal informatio­n if she refused to comply with the instructio­ns given.

He said the victim who lost more than RM4,000 then decided to lodge a police report after realising that she was duped.

Kuala Terengganu deputy police chief Superinten­dent Suffian Sulaiman confirmed receiving a report on the case and that it was being investigat­ed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
