‘Set up special committee to handle student delinquency’
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation yesterday proposed that the Education Ministry set up a special interministerial committee to study and report student delinquency in schools.
Its senior vice-chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said the special committee should comprise experts who could fully comprehend the situation and offer longterm solution to student delinquency in schools.
“It would be appropriate to set up this special interministerial committee to study the problem and have it analysed so that the authorities could identify the causes, examine the contributing factors, and produce concrete and feasible solutions to address them.
“The study is necessary to enable the authorities to gauge the seriousness of student delinquency and their involvement in crime, smoking, drugs, mental health and other social issues.
“Other social problems involving students like truancy, bullying and gangsterism must also be taken into account,” he said here yesterday.
Lee said the outcome of the study could be used to safeguard the interest of students and look into the weaknesses of the education system, particularly with regard to school management.
“The special committee should examine and review the Education Act 1996 and other regulations to assess and determine whether they are relevant and able to meet the challenges in student delinquency,” he added.
