Four killed in collision

HULU SELANGOR: Four people were killed and two others seriously injured in a collision involving a Proton Saga and a Toyota Hilux at Km45 of Jalan Ipoh-KL in Batang Kali, near here, yesterday.

The dead were identified as the driver of the Proton Saga, Lai Wui Lun, 21, and his passengers Chen Mun Li, 20, Chong Yoong Hong, 20, and Chang Thung Yuen, 22.

Lai and Chen died at the scene, while Chong and Chang were pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital and Selayang Hospital, respective­ly.

The two injured are another passenger of the Proton Saga, Ong Hui Chen, 16, and the Hilux driver, Rajan Vaithiling­am, 46.

Ong is treated at Selayang Hospital, while Rajan, who sustained injuries to his left rib, is treated at KPJ Rawang.

Selangor Traffic Enforcemen­t and Investigat­ion Department chief Superinten­dent Azman Shari’at said the Hilux was travelling to Batang Kali from Rawang when the collision happened.

“All passengers in the Proton Saga are friends. They were on their way home after attending a wedding in Batang Kali.

“The Proton Saga, which was travelling in the opposite lane, swerved into the Hilux’s lane. The Hilux driver tried to avoid hitting the car, but failed. The cars collided.”

He said the case was being investigat­ed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (operations) assistant director Mohd Rizal Buang said the three injured victims in the Proton Saga were helped by passers-by before firefighte­rs arrived.

“The bodies of Lai and Chen were trapped in the badly-damaged car and had to be extricated by Fire and Rescue personnel using special equipment.

“Their bodies were handed to the police.”
