Chong Wei tells media he will meet them in due time

- REPORTS BY FABIAN PETER fabian.mark@nstp.com.my

FORMER World No 1 Lee Chong Wei responded to the media for the first time yesterday since he was diagnosed with early stage nose cancer. The 36-year-old, who was in Taiwan for over two months for treatment arrived home yesterday, but chose to avoid the media.

Instead, the three-time Olympic Games silver medallist, in a voice note to NSTP Sport said: “Please inform everyone from the press not to wait for me.

“I need to rest. I will hold a press conference soon with the members of the media.

“Just allow me to rest for a few days before I meet everyone. Thank you.”

News of Chong Wei’s illness first came to light in July when the shuttler was withdrawn from the World Championships in Nanjing and the Asian Games in Indonesia.

In an initial statement released by the BA of Malaysia (BAM), the national body claimed that Chong Wei was suffering from a respiratory-related disorder.

It was only on Sept 22 the national body confirmed that Chong Wei was suffering from nose cancer.

Since then, many have come out to show support by wishing the shuttler well, including top international shuttlers.

It is, however, still uncertain if Chong Wei will ever return to competitive badminton as there have been talk of the shuttler calling time on his illustrious career.

He has 69 titles, including four All England crowns, to his name.

Whatever his decision, fans should support Chong Wei by allowing the shuttler to have his time and space.

It is understood that Chong Wei responded well to treatment in Taiwan, and is on his way to recovery.
