Mahdzir: Umno to call for meeting

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will call for a working committee council meeting once there is clearer information on the possibility of party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being charged in court.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobbby yesterday, said there had yet to be any concrete information on the possibility of Zahid being charged tomorrow.

“We will wait and see what happens over the next few days. If the need arises, we will call for the council meeting.”

Mahdzir, a former education minister, was questioned for five hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday.

MACC director of investigations Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani said Mahdzir was called to the MACC headquarters to assist in investigations into a project to install solar panels in 369 rural schools in Sarawak. Mahdzir gave his statement from 10am to 3pm.

On July 9, a former special officer to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was remanded by MACC for six days to assist investigations into the case. According to sources, the 44-year-old Datuk, who also served Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, was probed following allegations that he solicited kickbacks from a company in Bintulu that was awarded the tender to install solar panels in Sarawak schools.

Sarawak Report earlier reported that Najib endorsed the RM1.25 billion project, which was awarded to a car rental company in Bintulu without going through the open tender process set out by the Education Ministry.

It also reported that ministry staff who raised concerns about the matter were transferred out, while no action was taken despite reports being made to the police and MACC.
