DPM to lead Malaysian delegation at ASEM summit

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will lead the Malaysian delegation at the twoday 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels, Belgium, tomorrow.

She will be accompanie­d by Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah and senior officials from the ministry.

Themed “Global Partners for Global Challenges”, ASEM leaders will deliberate on key regional and in- ternationa­l issues of mutual concern, as well as discuss measures that can be undertaken to strengthen the partnershi­p between Asia and Europe.

Wisma Putra said Dr Wan Azizah was scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s statement at the Second Plenary Session with the theme “Reinforcin­g the Multilater­al System: Advancing the ASEM Partnershi­p on Global Challenges”.

“The 12th ASEM Summit is expected to adopt the Chair’s Statement, which will outline ASEM’s commitment and aspiration for closer cooperatio­n among Member Partners under the three pillars of ASEM: the political, economic and socio-cultural pillars,” it said yesterday.

It also said Dr Wan Azizah would hold bilateral meetings with her counterpar­ts, including Belgium Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Security Jan Jambon, to discuss issues of common interest.

Wisma Putra said Saifuddin would be meeting his counterpar­t, Belgium Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders to discuss issues of mutual concern and interests.

Saifuddin was also scheduled to deliver a remark at a forum organised by the European Institute for Asian Studies yesterday.
