‘Local vendors can contribute to third national car project’
than 80 per cent of Malaysia’s vendors are highly competent with skills to produce vehicle components, especially for the third national car project.
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Ong Kian Ming said the vendors were capable of producing high-quality components that would contribute to the success of the project.
“On the issue of skilled workforce, I wish to inform that in terms of vendor development, over 80 per cent of vehicle components made in Malaysia are by local vendors.
“The percentage is high compared with Vietnam, with only 20 per cent of its local vendors capable of doing so,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
He was answering a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN Umno-Pasir Salak) on the capability of Malaysia’s workforce to develop the third national car project.
In replying to a supplementary question from Wong Chen (PH PKR-Subang) on whether the government would carry out related impact-assessment studies, including on research and development, Ong said such measure would be carried out in due course.
“For now, we need to gauge the direction of the country’s automotive industry.
“We have yet to assess proposals by private companies and individuals interested to get involved in the third national car project.”
It was reported that the government had received two proposals for the project.
