-

LANGKAWI: Two children with cancer seemed to forget their pain for a while when they not only realised their dreams of visiting the island, but also met Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad here yesterday.

Mohd Danish Iskandar Azmin, 16, and Mohd Haziq Asyriffan Abdul Rahman, 10, were beaming as they sang and chatted with the prime minister at a hotel here.

When met, Danish from SMK Hamid Khan in Penang, said the visit and meeting Dr Mahathir were the most memorable moment in his life.

“I still can’t believe that I finally visited Langkawi and got to meet Tun.

“I’d like to thank all who made this possible. I will remember this as long as I live,” said Danish, who came with his father Azmin Abdul Aziz, 44, and mother, Sabrina Sahid, 43.

Haziq Asyriffan, who has had leukaemia since he was 5, felt the same.

His father, Abdul Rahman Md Desa, 36, said his son was excited about setting foot in Langkawi. “We arrived here last Friday. “He was cheerful and smiled a lot when he met the prime minister.

“His condition has been deteriorating and his speech is incoherent. But he was full of spirit in Langkawi,” he said.

Harian Metro had reported that one of Danish’s and Haziq Asyriffan’s last wishes was to visit Langkawi.

The 30-minute meeting was arranged by the President of Friends of Childhood Cancer Northern Region Association Maznah Tayib and the Langkawi Member of Parliament Office.
