Residents want Melaka govt to solve road closure woes

-

MELAKA: Residents living in the vicinity of Jalan Kampung Pulau Nibong and Taman Akasia are waiting for the state government and local authorities to find a solution to the road closure issue.

Juliah Mohamat, 45, a bakery operator in Kampung Pulau Nibong, said she hoped the state government and the elected representative for the constituency would not give them false hope by promising to have a dialogue with local residents.

“There has not been any discussion between the state government and the people who are affected by the road closure.

“Apart from that, there have been no efforts to widen the narrow road in front of the flats, which is causing traffic congestion in the area,” she said yesterday.

The road closure became known after a video of state Agriculture, Entrepreneurial Development and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee arguing with local residents went viral.

Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari was reported to have said that discussions on the closure of the road would involve residents of the housing estate and villagers, together with the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council and Melaka Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Tey Kok Kiew.

Juliah, one of the villagers who argued with Norhizam in the video, said the road closure was inconveniencing villagers in the area and residents of Bukit Beruang and Ayer Keroh as they could not use the road as a shortcut.

On the situation, Tey said he had instructed the local authorities to discuss the issue with the residents and find a solution.

“We will not ignore the problems faced by the people.

“We will look for the best solution that will benefit all,” he said after opening a wedding boutique in Ayer Keroh yesterday.

He gave an assurance that an alternative road would be made available to the villagers.
