-

TAPAH: A businessman was fined RM2,000 by the magistrate’s court here after pleading guilty to assaulting a petrol station attendant earlier this month.

Muhammad Nuralif Shaufiq Ahmad Fauzi, 25, pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan.

He was charged with causing hurt to Muhammad Ridwan Abdullah, 24, at a Petronas petrol station in Sungkai near here at 12.45pm on Oct 6.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides a fine of not more than RM2,000, imprisonment of up to a year, or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Fatin Farahiyah Nadzri prosecuted, while the defendant was represented by lawyer S. Kavitha.

In mitigation, Kavitha pleaded for the minimum sentence, saying her client was remorseful.

However, Fatin requested for a stiffer penalty against the accused to deter him from repeating the offence.

The magistrate meted out a fine of RM2,000 and the accused faced up to five months’ jail if he fails to pay the fine.

It was reported that the accused and another suspect were detained in connection with the assault on the attendant, which was captured on closed-circuit television camera.

The footage went viral.
