Malaysia’s tough ask against Tajikistan

- Ajitpal Singh

expect a torrid time when they face Tajikistan in their second Group D match of the AFC Under-19 Championship at the Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi, Indonesia today.

Bojan Hodak’s side were edged 2-1 by Saudi Arabia in their opening game while an impressive Tajikistan defeated China 1-0, both matches were played on Saturday.

The Croatian coach said: “Tajikistan were very impressive against China.

“They did not allow the East Asian team to create even one opportunity.

“Mubin Ergashev’s side do not dominate physically like the Saudis and China, but they are very strong and mature.

“Defensively, they are disciplined.

“They surprised everyone in the qualifiers when they knocked out Uzbekistan and from there you can see that they have quality.”

Hodak picked Saidov Karomatullo and Solehov Sharafjon as Tajikistan’s key players who will cause a lot of problems for his team.

“The duo are dangerous and strong in midfield. My players have viewed Tajikistan’s match against China, and I believe they will be ready.

“Tactically, we are okay but we need to work on our technical aspect.

“My players have issues keeping the ball against teams who are aggressive.

“This is because our players lack high intensity matches in the domestic league.

“They understand this and I hope they will improve match by match.

“We are going into tomorrow’s (today’s) match with no pressure.

“Our target is to go out and give our best and if our best is good enough for a win or draw, it will be fantastic,” said Hodak, adding that four players are down with minor knocks but should be available for the game.
