COP HIGHWAY UNIT TO BE EXPANDED
Team has brought down crime, says IGP
THE Highway Investigation Unit (HIU) will be expanded to cover eight states next year, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
Fuzi said the unit, which came under the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (TEID), covered 66km from the Sungai Besi toll plaza to Senawang.
He said four district police headquarters — Serdang, Kajang, Nilai and Seremban — were involved
“The unit will be expanded to cover the North-South Expressway from Jitra, Kedah, to Johor Baru, with a distance of 863.7km. It will involve eight states — Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
“The HIU tasked to investigate minor road accidents on the highway has received positive feedback from road users.
“Since its launch in February, HIU has solved 5,256 cases. It has brought down crime in the areas because the unit also makes rounds in designated areas,” he said after attending Bukit Aman’s monthly assembly organised by TEID here yesterday.
Fuzi said the expansion was in the planning stages and might be carried out next year.
“We need to arrange logistical assets and manpower. Once the government approves it, we will expand the team.”
On the police’s wish list for the 2019 Budget, Fuzi said the police made a reasonable request and hoped the allocation would emphasise the welfare of policemen.
“We have sent the recommendations to the government.
“We hope to get ample allocation, but we understand the constraints faced by the government. The welfare of the police force remains our priority, including housing.”
